How do I know if my English Labrador Retriever is overweight?
Posted by in Dog Picture FAQ, tags: English, know, Labrador, overweight, RetrieverQuestion by Stephanie: How do I know if my English Labrador Retriever is overweight?
We've just been to the vet, who says our lab needs to be on a diet. I look at his father's pictures
http://riverroad1.tripod.com/joe.html
and our dog actually looks a bit skinnier than his dad, though our dog is taller. Our lab is 95 lbs, and his father is 85 (grandfather's range 97-108 lbs).
Every time I bring up the English vs. American lab difference, our vet seems insulted. However, I have to think that he's comparing our dog to an American lab, since our vet has told us that our dog is almost obese.
Based on our vet's recommendation, we're now down to feeding our lab two cups of Adult Innova, down from a year ago when we were feeding him almost four as per dog food's directions.
I don't want to starve our dog if our vet doesn't/won't understand.
We are feeding him one cup twice per day, down from 1.25 cups twice per day. But it is Innova, which has more densely-packed nutrients than an Iams-type brand.
I mention English vs. American lab type because Americans are much skinnier than English, and of course an English lab would look obese next to an American.

Honestly, a lot of show Labs are overweight, but "Joe" looks to be in good condition to me.
Why not ask your breeder?

Hi Stephanie (check out my name), Wel i think that if your vet does not understand then you should get another vets opinion, one vet is not always right. Try a different clinic, they might understand the situation more. One way to tell if your dog is overweight or obese is
1. Does he have trouble breathing
2.When you move your hand along his sides or chest, can you feel the ribs but not see them or do you just feel squishey fat?
can you feel his ribs when you run your hands on them?
are you feeding 2 cups a day or 2 cups twice a day?
take weight comments with a grain a salt – that dog in the picture looks great. bench labs are stockier than field labs – my field lab is 85lbs but very, very leggy. how much you feed should depend on your pups activity level. the less active, the less food. the more active, more food. if you feel he’s putting on too much weight, cut him back.
if my vet ever gave me any heat or looked to be insulted by my comments, he’d have one less client to deal with
He is overweight. Has your vet run a thyroid panel to rule out medical problems?
My vet says directions on the bag usually suggest a little too much food. If your dog is active he needs what the bag says, if not he needs less.
You should be able to feel your dogs ribs, but not see them.
Is the two cups once a day or twice? I have a 95# lab and I feed him twice a day two cups at each meal. He had gotten up 130# but to me he did not look overweight. If your vet says he is overweight he probably is. I was able to get the dog down to 95# by reducing the amount of food from 5 cups a day to four. I also changed his food from regular to diet. He was not hungry and lost the weight. You want to keep the weight off the dog. As he ages it will become harder for him to get around if he carries to much weight. My dog is now 11 and has a difficult time getting up. If he were still 130# I do not think he would have lived this long.
English vs American has nothing to do with it. Fat is fat.
Essentially the ribs should not be visible, but you should be able to feel them. The dog should have a “waist” (tuck up) behind the rib area.
Here’s how it was explained to me. Make a fist. Run your finger (of the other hand) over the finger area. You can feel the bones, right? That’s what your dog’s ribs should feel like to you. Now run your fingers over the knuckle. If that’s what the ribs feel like, the dog is too thin. Now run your fingers over the back of the hand. You can probably feel the bones slightly, but not much. If that’s what the dog’s ribs feel like, the dog is too fat.
If a vet is telling you the dog is too fat, you can bet he is. Most vets are *extremely* reluctant to say anything about a dog’s weight, as most owners don’t take this too well.
BTW, most “show” Labs are fat. Sadly, that’s how they’re shown.
You don’t need a vets opinion to tell you if your dog is overweight or not. Look above him and make sure he has a waist. Make sure that you can feel his ribs but not see them, and try and keep the weight the same.
Big old English labs are big boned, and therefore stockier than some.
We have 4 puppies and feed them IAMS puppy food, and on the back of the box it says how to tell if your dog is over weight or underweight. Your suppost to look down on the dogs back and see if you can see their ribs really well. This means their underweight. If you can’t see their ribs or their stomoch is really round, then they might be overweight. An average weight dog would be somewhere in between there.
I think Joe looks good & just nice. Your dog should be around his weight or a little bit under is fine. Some people say that if the dog’s weight is under the average weight, the dog will live slightly longer. I guess it’s good especially for heavy, bulky breeds like Labs & Goldens because they are prone to joint problems… And if you are not showing your dog & your dog is the hyper type then it might be a good idea to keep him slim. I never listen to Vets because some will say my “just nice” Golden is over weight, some say too thin. I guess it depends on each person on what they think is fat & thin. You should be able to feel his ribs when you touch him but the ribs should NOT be visible.
@smsalterego – While I’d tend to agree, I’ve encountered vets who run simply on a X vs. Y axis of age and breed. That’s like saying a 5’10 person should weigh as much as a 6’9 person.
I hope the vet did other tests, but I’ve heard the rib test before.
If you can feel his ribs he is a good weight. You should be able to feel them when you run your fingers along his sides or when he jumps. Try getting a second opinion from a different vet. But it is normal to eat two cups a day. Currently my uncles year old lab has eaten 4 cups and the vet and food bag say to start lowering the amount to 2 cups.
Nothing personal, but your vet knows more about dogs than you ever will. I took a look at the dog in the picture and yes that dog is overweight.
You need to look at this site. http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?c=2+2099&aid=661
Each dog is evaluated on it’s own merits. The chart shown is what your vet goes by and what has been accepted according to research. Don’t be an arrogant fool to think that your dog or breed of dog is so special that it does not conform to this.
Being overweight for a dog can lead to early hip dysplasia, requiring expensive and painful surgery to correct. It also causes the dog to suffer when it walks.
Labs from what I have seen, are especially susceptible to being overweight because they as a breed tend to gobble food whenever they can get it.
Listen to your vet, they are your dogs best bet for a healthy and happy life.
You should be able to feel a dog’s ribs but not see them. If you can’t see them OR feel them then he is overweight.
