Question by ashzambuto: How to tell the difference between American Pit Bull Terrier and American Bull Dog?
I have a dog that I always thought was an APBT but a few people have suggested that she might be an American Bull Dog. I have seen pictures of both that look so much like her! How can I tell the difference??
here are a couple of pictures of her.

She could be a mixed breed, can you show me a picture of your dog?

Alright, they look completely different so you should be able to tell the difference easily. However, here is a short discription of both breeds.

American Pit Bull Terrier:

Head
Medium length, deep through, broad skull, very pronounced cheek muscles, distinct stop; and ears are set high. Ears - Cropped or uncropped, the latter preferred. Uncropped ears should be short and held rose or half prick. Full drop to be penalized. Eyes - Dark and round, low down in skull and set far apart. No pink eyelids. Muzzle - Medium length, rounded on upper side to fall away abruptly below eyes. Jaws well defined. Underjaw to be strong and have biting power. Lips close and even, no looseness. Upper teeth to meet tightly outside lower teeth in front.

American Bulldog:

The perfect Bulldog must be of medium size and smooth coat; with heavy, thick-set, low-swung body, massive short-faced head, wide shoulders and sturdy limbs. The general appearance and attitude should suggest great stability, vigor and strength. The disposition should be equable and kind, resolute and courageous (not vicious or aggressive), and demeanor should be pacific and dignified. These attributes should be countenanced by the expression and behavior.

Okay, now, this is something that people often get confused about. Do you know what a real APBT should look like?

THIS, is not what they are supposed to look like, people are overfeeding them just so they can fight, this one weighs over 100 pounds.

Hope this helped.

EDIT: She looks more Pitty, but from the first picture she looks a bit like a Bulldog. I still think she's an APBT.

    Size plays a huge part.
An American Bulldog should never be confused with uniquely different breeds such as the American Staffordshire Terrier or the American Pit Bull Terrier.

    http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/americanpitbull.htm

    American Bulldog:
    Height-
    Males 22-28 inches (55-70 cm.)
    Females 20-26 inches (52-65 cm.)

    Weight-
    Males 70-120 pounds (32-54 kg.)
    Females 60-100 pounds (27-45kg.)

The APBT ranges in size from 22 pounds to 110 pounds (rare), with the most common being between 35 – 55 pounds.

Size and face – American Pit Bull longer, stronger, mean looking whereas American Bull Dog has round face and rounder body. There is another dog resembling American pit – think English but it is HUGE, awesome.

Be extremely carefulw ith American pits – often used in fighting – have seen In Houston 5th Ward pit bulls – young – chained to 25-50 pound dumbells and dragging around for strength. Get a Fox Terrier – you will love.

    pit bull =
    hight is 18in – 22in
    weight 50lb – 80lb

    american bulldog
    hight 19in – 28in
    weight 65lb – 130lb

so the bulldog is usualy bigger and heaver. also the face lookes more simler to a normal bulldog than as pit.

Your dog looks more like an APBT. AmBulls have a different shaped face and body structure. APBT’s look a little more athletic, like your dog. AmBulls usually have droopier lips, and it looks like your dog has tighter lips, like an APBT.

When I clicked on the links you provided to your dog, I get taken to the login page for myspace. But, without seeing the pictures I can tell you that if your dog looks like some of both, she probably is. Whenever a breed becomes popular, there’s a tendency for every jack*** and their grandma to suddenly think it’s a good idea to breed their dog regardless of the dog’s ancestry. And, in the case of the APBT, there’s been some definite outcrossing done with larger bull breeds to produce a larger, blockier dog. (An example of greedy breeders pandering to the masses in my opinion). APBTs and ABs are both wonderful dogs. She’s probably some of both. So go with whichever you think she looks like the most. And, enjoy your dog!

By the way, you aren’t the only one who has problems discerning whether a dog is really a pit bull. I’ve passed on this test to shelter workers, vet techs, etc. No one has picked the APBT out of the line up on the first try that I know of so far. http://www.pitbullsontheweb.com/petbull/findpit.html
